Keep Blood off your Hands!
Do You Know Where Your Diamonds Come From?
Hollywood-blockbuster Blood Diamond opens in cinemas around the country on
Friday 26 January. The film focuses on the conflict in Sierra Leone during
the 1990s. Leonardo DiCaprio plays an ex-mercenary turned diamond hunter as
the rebel Revolutionary United Front (RUF) funds its brutal war by
smuggling diamonds to neighbouring countries for export.
The film presents an opportunity for us to raise awareness of the fact that
the blood diamond trade remains a concern and the diamond industry and
governments need to strengthen controls on the trade to ensure that
diamonds never again fuel the sort of human rights abuses witnessed in the
1990s.
