Out of Control: Ask your MP to Reform Enforced Removals

Use of improper techniques in forcibly removing already appears to have led to the death of father-of-five Jimmy Mubenga in October 2010.

"On 12 October 2010, Jimmy Mubenga was put on a plane accompanied by three private security guards to be forcibly removed from the UK. He died during this process. The three private security guards accompanying Jimmy are under investigation for alleged manslaughter and are currently on bail. Before he died, witnesses heard Jimmy cry out that the guards were going to kill him."

People with direct experience of enforced removals have told Amnesty International UK of serious failings in the training of private security contractors conducting returns. There is no mandatory training in the safe use of handcuffs and restraints.

Amnesty International UK believe that a complete overhaul of the current enforced removal process is needed to ensure the UK Government meets its obligations to protect people being removed against improper treatment.
